Anatomy and physiology applications for asana and pranayama. Class will include directions and planes of movement, structure and function of major bones, muscle groups and connective tissue. Discussion of major components of the skeletal, muscular, organ and nervous systems as they may influence students’ access and experience in practice. Students will be able to identify anatomical landmarks and reference them in teaching asana and pranayama.
January 18 – General Anatomy;  Overview of Human Anatomy and Physiology including Movement Planes, Types of Tissue and their properties,  medical terms, general body types
January 25 – Anatomy and Physiology of the Spine and Thorax
February 22 – Anatomy and Physiology of the Foot, ankle, and knee
March 1 – Anatomy and Physiology of the Hips and Pelvis
March 8 – Anatomy and Physiology of the Shoulders and Upper extremities
March 15 – Integration of Anatomy and Physiology Concepts- stretch response, further discussion of tissue properties, identifying potential vulnerabilities of individuals in certain poses, risk for injury; previous anatomy classes recommended
