Yoga for mental health concepts and application for yoga students and teachers. Students will learn foundations of emotional and mental health including structure and function of the nervous system as evidence in practice. They will develop language for addressing mental and emotional health concepts in practice from both a western and an eastern perspective. Includes self-reflection exercises and other practices rooted in the niyamas, asana, pranayama, pratyahara and dharana. Familiarize students with concepts related to mental and emotional health and how to incorporate into hatha practice. Students will understand and be able to clearly articulate benefits of yoga and meditation. The will learn and practice teaching basic hatha techniques from a mental/emotional health perspective. Students will also be able to modify techniques to accommodate client and group needs. Techniques and practice of eight limbs in relation to mental and emotional health process and regulation. Students will experience physiological effects of categories of asana including backbends, forward bends and restorative postures and pranayama techniques, primarily for parasympathetic nervous system activation. Students will understand, through their experience, the effects of different families of asana and pranayama techniques on mental and emotional health.
